Insular Southeast Asia: Indonesia and Malaysia

The starting point and focus of the degree program in Cologne is modern Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia), both because of its relevance as a modern language for literature, government, and science and because of its proximity to classical and modern Malay.

Teaching and research cover both the traditional and the modern literatures and languages of the area against the background of and in their linkages with the macroculture of the societies in question. Studying Islam in Southeast Asia is one important focal area within this philological concentration.
